Though the Christian life has in its essence the substance of joy, happiness is an altogether different thing. Pursuing happiness requires from us striving for easy circumstances, comfortable living, and tranquil waters. If a person is living his life merely to be happy, they will compromise something more essential: Holiness. It comes as a shock to many believers to learn that God is much more interested in them becoming holy than He is becoming happy. 1st Peter reminds Christians that living for Christ often calls for the prick of the thorns as well as the fragrance of roses.
