When the American liberator, Abraham Lincoln, brought to pass the great Emancipation Proclamation, the prayers of countless slaves were answered. Their chains no longer could hold them, their owners lost all thier rights, and the worth of their humanity was finaly recognized in American law. What is not often noted is how many slaves refused to leave the plantations, remained with their old masters, and chose bondage over liberty. Today, we cannot begin to fathom why one would choose a life of chains and, yet, many Christians do exactly this. What was true for some slaves in the 1800's is lived out daily by Christians today. Jesus Christ has set us free from legalistic codes and man-made laws. Christ has purchased us off the block and told us that we are free to live with Him, and in Him. The Apostle Paul wrote to the churches of Galatia to warn them that some teachers were seeking to enslave them unto the very things from which they had been delivered. He counsels them to tenaciously guard their gracious freedom, and to refute those who bring a false gospel of works and rules. Because it is for freedom that Jesus Christ makes us free, we do well to learn what that means.
