A famous preacher once estimated that more than 70% of people who call themselves Christians have never been truly born again. If his estimate is only 50% accurate, we discover that nearly 4 out of every ten professing Christians have never been genuinely converted. Observing the modern church, it is not difficult to see how true this might be. If Jesus Christ lived, died, and rose again to make us new creations, then why is it so difficult to discern a difference between unbelievers and those who say they belong to Christ? Can a truly born again Christian live in habitual sin? Can one who has been so loved by God remain loveless to his fellow Christians? Is it possible to be truly born again only to walk away from the faith at a later time? The answers to these questions and others serve to enable us to evaluate the genuineness of our relationship with God. The Book of 1st John is one of the most sobering in Scripture as it reveals to us that a faith that saves results in a marked difference in how we live. May this study serve to help each us first examine our own heart before we begin to point a finger at anyone else.
